Editor’s note:

It’s that time of year again, when those of us orbiting the foreign exchange sphere gather to talk shop. And talk shop we shall do over a packed out three days here at TradeTech FX 2024. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Amsterdam in the Autumn, Europe’s biggest gathering of foreign exchange worshippers is back once again, and The TRADE is delighted to return as the official media partner to the event.

In the wake of the shift to T+1 in the US, I think many of you will join me in wondering what was all the fuss about? After plaguing the headlines – it certainly kept us busy – and with many predicting a cataclysmic impact on the markets, it’s pretty clear to see that the overall conclusion is everything is mostly fine.

There are some creases to be ironed out, but it would be strange if there weren’t. And, while it may seem anticlimactic to those of us more inclined to the theatrical, it can only be seen as a positive that the markets have been able to ride the shortened settlement wave quite so well. The industry is now looking to Europe and the UK to see when they might follow suit.

It would be wrong to put pen to paper for the editor’s letter without touching on the macro landscape. As we all know, the world revolves around the US and with the Federal Reserve expected to finally cut interest rates in the next few days and with what’s been an eventful election set to come to fruition in November, it’s likely that many of you will be keeping a keen eye on the horizon to see what the ripple effects may be.

This week’s event will explore every corner of the foreign exchange markets, touching on innovations on the trading desk, execution automation, data-driven investment decisions, tech stacks, the macro landscape, the liquidity landscape, data and analytics, algos, talent and more.

In this issue, you’ll find content tailored especially to the next few days including exclusive interviews with buy-side speakers unpacking both the topics discussed in their panels and wider industry themes, the latest news and people moves, thought leadership content and the official conference agenda. It was a delight to put this edition together and we hope it helps to guide you through the event.

For now, all that’s left to say is have a great conference and be sure to say hello to The TRADE team if you see them darting about!

It’s that time of year once again where the equity trading community congregates together in Paris for one of the most significant events in its calendar. TradeTech Europe offers those operating in our space a platform to raise their voices above the noise and talk about the topics that really matter to them. Every year, friends and colleagues gather together and The TRADE is delighted to return
once again to the Palais de Congrès as the official media partner to the event.

Right, that’s the positive bit out of the way, time for some harsh realities. As we enter Q2, traders once again find themselves in a continuously challenging environment and on the cusp of yet another wave of change to navigate. Markets globally are teetering on the precipice of moving towards a rate cutting regime, with many looking to the plethora of elections going on globally as a key driver for this change. Meanwhile the regulatory landscape continues to shift as amendments agreed as part of the Mifid review roll out into the market and the industry prepares for the shift to T+1 in the US. Against this backdrop, trading desks have been forced to become increasingly advanced and savvy with the way that they operate, whether that be through new strategies or technology.

These themes are translated into the panels you’ll listen to this week and the content you’ll read in this issue of The TRADETech Daily. It wouldn’t be a TRADE issue without a string of interviews with buy-side speakers and this year you’ll find content exploring optimising algorithms, navigating the macroeconomic landscape, hiring new talent, leveraging retail liquidity and much more from speakers across T. Rowe Price, Man Group, Candriam, Federated Hermes, Invesco, Fidelity, and AXA Investment Managers.

The TRADE team will be in full force on the ground at this year’s event (travelling by Eurostar this year instead of pedalling) so make sure to come and say hello if you spot us. For now, all that’s left to say is bonne conférence!

Editor’s note:

If the last few years are anything to go by then 2024 is set to be another eventful 12 months and what better way to get stuck into the first quarter than with TradeTech FX US here in Miami. As a team, we at The TRADE take pride every year in being the official media sponsor for the TradeTech FX conference, and it’s a delight to continue in that role but this time on the other side of the Atlantic.

The TradeTech FX conferences each year offer those active in this sphere a forum to explore the shifting market backdrop they find themselves trying to navigate. But step away from the panels on stage, and the conference is a hive of networking opportunities for those looking to catch up with old friends, peers and colleagues, as well as create new relationships.

With the US shift to T+1 set for just a few months’ time, the foreign exchange markets are set to undergo one of the biggest overhauls they have ever seen. The global macro-economic turbulence seen in the last few years shows no sign of abating. Against the backdrop of continued divergence in economies globally, traders dealing in these markets are likely set to see another hyperactive year. But it’s not all bad. Many of the events and trends seen in the last few years have become catalysts for change.

The foreign exchange markets are virtually unrecognisable from just a decade ago thanks to innovation and collaboration, with more volumes moving on exchange and new automated and algorithmic solutions coming to market all the time. This magazine touches on all this and more with the latest news and people moves, a cover feature exploring the future of algorithmic trading in non-deliverable forwards (NDFs), thought leadership content and the official conference agenda.

It wouldn’t be a TRADETech FX Daily without a string of exclusive content with buy- and sell-side speakers from this year’s conference and this edition is no exception. Inside you’ll find in depth interviews with individuals from T. Rowe Price, Masa Capital, Banco de Crédito (BCP) and more, covering everything from NDFs innovation, restricted currency trading and custody, to OEMS/platform selection.

We’ve got some exciting US-focused news to share with you so make sure to keep an eye out for The TRADE team on the ground at the event and come and say hello over the next few days. Have a wonderful conference!

The official newspaper of TradeTech FX Europe 2023

Editor’s note:

It’s that time of year again, where we find ourselves in the thrall of event season and reunited in Paris at the industry’s most prominent foreign exchange conference. TradeTech FX offers those operating within the world of foreign exchange an opportunity to congregate for idea sharing and networking, and The TRADE is delighted to bring you this official magazine, designed to accompany and guide you through the event!

This year has paved the way for some of the most extensive evolution the foreign exchange market has seen in decades. Almost recovered from the volatile macroeconomic fallout that followed the invasion of Ukraine last year, foreign exchange traders are now facing a new challenge, and this time it is coming from within the back-office.

The shift to T+1 settlement is set to make waves in the market with the expectation that it will in some way disrupt current methods to source liquidity, net flows, match trades, and ensure best execution. The changes will require an operational overhaul for many firms to ensure business continues as usual. US implementation is currently set for May 2024, however whether or not the rest of the world will follow suit is yet to be seen, meaning divergence could once again be on the cards.

The prospect of T+1 comes against the backdrop of an already tempestuous and black swan event-prone market. Economies globally are continuing to diverge as central banks’ decisions intended to curb inflation around the world begin to show their effects. Meanwhile, the last few months have played host to swathes of technology- focused collaborations across venues and the buy- and sell-side as appetite for increased electronification and new technologies ramps up – in particular in the clearing space.

This magazine touches on all the key topics from this year’s conference, spanning technology, regulation, post-trade, liquidity and data. It contains the latest major FX news and moves, a plethora of exclusive buy-side interviews with speakers from the event, a cover interview exploring the realities of the shift to T+1 settlement, thought leadership content and the official conference agenda.

As always keep your eyes peeled for The TRADE team on the ground and don’t hesitate to come and say hello. Bonne conférence!

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a whole year since we brought you the last edition of The TRADETech Daily but here we are again in Paris for one of the most pivotal events in the industry’s calendar. TradeTech Europe plays a central role in gathering colleagues, clients, peers and friends from across the industry for lively discussion of the topics most shaping the markets, all the while creating opportunities to make new connections and reminisce with old ones. We’re delighted to be back once again as the official media partner of the event.

The last 12 months have certainly kept us busy at The TRADE and if the first quarter of this year is anything to go by, then 2023 isn’t likely to offer any respite. As the official newspaper for the conference, The TRADETech Daily gives you a sneak peek at the central discussions taking place on stage at this year’s event. As we enter the much-anticipated Trilogue process in Europe, this edition brings you an in-depth cover feature exploring the current state of play of Mifid II regulation in both the UK and Europe – a topic central to several of the panels this year.

It wouldn’t be The TRADETech Daily without a string of exclusive buy-side interviews and this year’s edition is no exception, featuring insights from Comgest, BNP Paribas Asset Management, Barings, Fidelity International, T. Rowe Price and Jupiter Asset Management. You can also find the full event agenda at the back of this issue so you don’t miss any of the key discussions taking place over the next few days.

Finally, we couldn’t introduce this issue without mentioning the Sustainable Trading and TRAFIX sponsored cycle home from this year’s event, supported by BMO, in aid of Farms for City Children, which our very own Annabel Smith is taking part in! Visit https://www.justgiving.com/team/TradeTechReturn to donate to this worthy cause and keep an eye out for live coverage of their journey!

With both a digital and a print version (check out the online edition at thetradenews.com) this magazine will be your constant companion throughout the week. Don’t forget to check out thetradenews.com each day for detailed coverage of daily content: including panel coverage, keynote summaries, full-day video roundups, exclusive interviews, and much more.

Happy TradeTech-ing!

Editor’s note:

It’s event season once again, and 2022 has certainly been a year of reunions – it’s so good to be able to gather together in the same room again. We’re delighted to be back in Amsterdam with WBR to welcome you to TradeTech FX 2022 with the official event magazine, bringing you all the information you need to accompany the next three days.

This year’s TradeTech FX Daily provides you with crucial coverage including in-depth interviews with keynote speakers, detailed features on some of the most pressing issues of the day, and of course the full event agenda to help organise your time.

NBIM’s Ankur Pruthi gives us exclusive insight into the development (and future) of the FX Global Code, MEAG’s Elke Wenzler discusses how to navigate today’s turbulent markets and Man Group’s Gary Collier explores the importance of upskilling your workforce to prepare for the future. This year we also bring together some of the industry’s most active buy-side traders to speak ‘From the Floor’ on their own experiences of the FX markets, and how they’re handling the unprecedented volatility. Our features take a look at the convergence of crypto and conventional finance, the unstoppable rise of NDFs, and an exploration of biggest issues impacting the FX world today and how to weather that storm.

With rates going the way they’re going, inflation doing what it’s doing, and markets bouncing around the way they’re bouncing, it’s going to be a busy season post-summer – and there’s certainly a lot to talk about this week, so we can’t wait to get started.

Enjoy Amsterdam!

Editor’s note:

After two years of virtual events (and meetings, and conferences, and those endless Zoom calls…) it’s wonderful to finally be able to gather in person again and make that human connection. As the official newspaper for TradeTech Europe, we are delighted to once again be able to present a physical as well as digital publication to accompany you throughout the event, and we hope you enjoy reading this as much as we’ve enjoyed writing it.

The TRADETech Daily brings you 40 pages of in-depth industry content related to the key themes of this year’s event: from automation to execution, regulation to innovation, blockchain and data developments to ESG and inclusive workplace practices, and all the nitty gritty in between. We also bring you exclusive interviews from key buy-side players, giving their insights into the panels and themes that they are most excited about this year.

Together with top news stories, market insights and – of course – the full conference agenda on pages 37-39, the TRADETech Daily will be your invaluable ally during the next two days.

Editor’s note:

This year marks the second fully virtual TradeTech Europe and I’m delighted to present this issue of the official TRADETech Daily newspaper as the ultimate companion to the conference. As we gear up and listen to market participants discuss the new liquidity landscape thanks to COVID-19 and Brexit, there’s a sense of anticipation in the air.

With the full conference agenda on page 29, you’ll see there are several key themes that big names in buy-side trading will discuss at TradeTech this year. From systematic and automated trading to post-Brexit market structure and driving diversity across the industry, explore some of the must-see panels on page 28.

From pages 12 through to 23, the TRADETech Daily caught up with multiple buy-side trading speakers and attendees at this year’s event in exclusive interviews that preview some of the most highly anticipated panel sessions.

Despite this being another year that we are unable to meet and gather in Paris, the global vaccination programme promises light at the end of the tunnel. We hope to see you all again soon as the world returns to normal but in the meantime, enjoy the 2021 virtual TradeTech conference!

Editor’s note:

20 years of TradeTech

While we may not be in Paris this year, I’d like to welcome you to this virtual TradeTech Europe event, which also happens to mark 20 years of the conference.

Those of you who have attended every TradeTech conference since its inception (yes, there are some of you!), will know that TradeTech has lived through some pretty major events. From market changes such as MiFID I & II, to the 2008 financial crisis and Brexit fallout, to name a few, it’s been quite a couple of decades.

In this special edition of the TRADETech Daily newspaper, we outline some of those events (page 20) and, unsurprisingly, the coronavirus pandemic made the list.

While TradeTech has lived through some pretty dramatic times, this being one of them, it has never failed to lead the discussions for the equities trading landscape. The virtual debates scheduled for this year’s conference promise to deliver that once again, despite the circumstances. On page 26, we outline some of the highlights of TradeTech 2020 that shouldn’t be missed.

Elsewhere, to celebrate the event’s anniversary, we also reached out to some of the industry’s most well-known names and faces to provide us with their thoughts on the past couple of decades. You will find this special edition’s editorial contributions from page 10 onwards.

While we don’t see an end in sight to the disruption that has impacted us all so far this year, The TRADE’s editorial team is looking forward to seeing you all once again, whenever, wherever and however that may be.

Editor’s note:

With new dates now confirmed for TradeTech Europe 2020, The TRADE is delighted to present this preview version of the TRADETech Daily newspaper ahead of the event in October. Keeping you up-to-date with all the going ons in the equities trading world, our cover story [continued on page 4] is a deep dive into how buy-side traders, and indeed the industry, have coped with a new remote working environment. While it may be miserable for some, others have seemingly adapted quite quickly to the challenges they faced early on.

As a start to the year-long celebration of TradeTech’s 20th anniversary, we look at how the role of the buy- and sell-side trader has evolved since 2010 [page 18]. Elsewhere, TradeTech’s very own Susie Benaim discusses what delegates can expect to hear from the agenda [page 12] with the COVID-19 pandemic highly anticipated to dominate some discussions.

The TRADETech Daily will be back in October with its first on-the-ground edition, and you can expect more from the buy-side, as well as special editorial contributions from familiar faces and industry veterans. I’m certainly looking forward to the event – in my new role as editor of The TRADE – keep an eye out for our recently expanded editorial team too. We hope you enjoy this preview edition, and we look forward to seeing you all again in October in Paris.
